Was Wendy Killed by Judith’s Killer?

The man who murdered Wendy Sewell in 1973 in a Bakewell cemetery may have killed a teenager a year earlier.

The new claim is made by crime writer Scott Lomax in his new book Unsolved Murders in and Around Derbyshire.

Wendy Sewell was battered repeatedly around the head and died days later. Stephen Downing was arrested, charged and convicted with her murder, serving 27 years in prison before being sensationally cleared at the Court of Appeal following a campaign by Don Hale and the Matlock Mercury.

Mr Hale, the former editor of the Matlock Mercury, argued that Wendy Sewell was killed by the same man who murdered Barbara Mayo.

Scott Lomax believes another possible link may exist: “I do not believe that Wendy was killed by Barbara Mayo’s murderer. Whilst there are some similarities there are also major differences. However, I believe that the police should be looking at a link between the murders of Wendy Sewell and Judith Roberts who was killed in 1972 in Tamworth. Both women were struck repeatedly around the head and both women were partially stripped but no evidence of sexual assault was present in either case.”

Fourteen year old Judith Roberts disappeared from her Tamworth home in June 1972. her body was found three days later in a field. A local man named Andrew Evan was convicted of her murder before being cleared at the Court of Appeal which ruled his confession was unreliable and had not been genuine.

Scott added: “The police never considered a link at the time because by the time of Wendy Sewell’s murder, Andrew Evans was in prison having confessed to Judith Robert’s death but like Stephen Downing he had given a confession for a crime he did not commit. I believe the police should now be looking at whether there are two killers in these cases or just one man who has so far evaded justice.”

Scott has asked the police to consider the possibility of a link and to carry out tests to obtain DNA from the clothing worn by Wendy Sewell and Judith Roberts to aid comparisons.
