BARRY GEORGE FREE AT LAST!!!
At 2pm on Friday 1 August 2008 I
was informed a verdict had been reached in the case of Barry George. I rushed
into court. After a short delay the foreman announced the verdict: “Not
guilty.” It was a unanimous verdict. Each of the twelve members of the
jury had concluded, upon hearing a prosecution fuelled by character
assassination, that Barry George could not be held responsible for the murder
of Jill Dando.
Barry was discharged and left
the court in a taxi, a free man.
I would like to thank everyone
who supported Barry over the years and believed in his innocence. His legal
team were fantastic by achieving, against the odds, Barry’s freedom.
His bid for freedom was supported by politicians and experts in a number of
fields.
I am delighted that Barry is
now a free man and am proud to have played a part in the Justice for Barry
campaign which was set up and led by Barry’s uncle Mike.
Justice for Barry has been
achieved. I’m now anxious that justice for Jill is also achieved and I
hope that the police waste no time in opening their investigation so that the
callous killer who allowed an innocent man to go to prison, can finally be
brought to account.
Update 26 July 2008
The trial of Barry George is
coming to a close. We expect a verdict in the next week to week and a half.
The defence case ended on Tuesday. Due to illness of Barry on Wednesday and
the absence of a juror on Friday, there has been a slight delay. The defence
will be making their closing speech on Tuesday 29 July. The jury will be sent
out to consider their verdicts, probably on Thursday 31 July.
The defence case has been
encouraging. The evidence of a witness shows that at 7am on the morning of
the murder a woman was parked opposite Jill Dando’s home. She was
parked there until around 7:15am, going into her house, picking up boxes and
bringing them out to the car. At no point between 7 and 7:15am did she see a
double parked car or a man. Indeed she saw no one during that time. Susan
Mayes, the witness who places Barry George allegedly stood beside a double
parked car opposite Jill Dando’s home at 7am that morning is obviously
brought into question.
Barry did not take the stand to
give evidence due to his medical conditions. An expert witness said Barry is
in the bottom one percent of the population with regard to his ability to
plan, organise and execute his activities. The witness also stated Barry has
an IQ of 74 or 75 which is well below the average of 100.
Update on the Barry George trial
(7 July 2008)
Many people have commented to
me in recent weeks about the lack of coverage in the media of the trial. This
is for two reasons. Firstly, Barry George and a member of the jury were both
ill with a flu like illness. As a consequence the trial was adjourned for a
few days. There are also regular short breaks in the trial and so the hearing
is not taking place every day. Also the media are being more careful because
they recognise the criticism they faced following the original trial in 2001
where sensational, lurid headlines and stories reported upon the evidence
presented at that trial.
The prosecution case will be
ending in the next couple of days and the defence case will then open. The
defence case should prove to be fascinating and I believe will blow the case
against Barry out of the water. We expect the trial to be wrapped up this
month and a verdict at the end of this month or early in August.
Update on the Barry George trial
(15 June 2008)
The trial of Barry George began on 2 June 2008. The first three days were concerned with legal argument, of which nothing is legally allowed to be written. The fourth day (the Friday) was over before it began, with the judge ruling over the admissibility o evidence. In my opinion the legal argument favoured Barry George but I cannot allude to the reasoning behind that. The proper trial began on the Monday of the following week, when prosecution barrister Jonathan Laidlow QC opened the Crowns case. Evidence allegedly showing Barry George stalked a number of women was presented throughout the week, except for on the Tuesday when a visit to Fulham was made by the defence, prosecution, trial and jury. The evidence that Barry approached women in the years before the murder of Jill Dando is being introduced to suggest he had an unhealthy interest in women. There has never been any evidence that Jill Dando was being stalked and indeed it is widely accepted that she was not followed on the day of the murder. Instead, it has always been alleged, that the man who shot her dead had been loitering around the crime scene (her unlived in Fulham home) as if he was expecting her to be there or that he just got lucky. The defence team, headed by William Clegg QC, will eventually have their say over this evidence and their own arguments that Barry is innocent, and they will no doubt argue that Barry’s approaches towards women are entirely inconsistent with the gunman’s behaviour in respect to Jill Dando. The stalking victims claim Barry George repeatedly asked them out, pleading with them to go to dinner with him, and acting in an agitated manner. There is no evidence that the gunman engaged in any conversation with his victim (there simply was not time) before he swiftly committed his crime before walking calmly away. There are eight women on the jury and four men. We can only hope that the testimony of women approached by Barry in the years before the murder will not have any prejudicial impact upon their ability to determine whether the evidence they shall hear is proof beyond reasonable doubt that Barry Michael George forced Jill Dando to the ground on the doorstep of her unlived in home in broad daylight, pushed a specialist adapted firearm into the side of her head, fired a bullet and walked calmly away. The trial is expected to last a further five or six weeks. I am looking forward to celebrating with Barry George, his release at that time. Meanwhile I am receiving emails on a daily basis from people who claim they know who killed Jill Dando. I have had cranks contact me ever since I first wrote of the case. And since the retrial began I have been overwhelmed by emails purporting that they know of ‘corrupt police officers’ who were responsible, or that a Manchester based gang was behind the murder. It is no wonder the police had difficulty finding Jill’s killer when there are so many timewasters around willing to send the police on wild goose chases. Over the course of my research I have had several individuals named as Jill Dando’s killer. |
