Thirteen Unsolved Murders Investigated in New Book

A NEW book by a Derbyshire crime writer reveals details of 13 cases of unsolved murders in and around the county.

The book, entitled. Unsolved Murders in and Around Derbyshire, is written by crime writer Scott Lomax who has previous written books on the cases of Barry George and Jeremy Bamber.

The book features the cases of

  • Herbert Nottingham Turner, murdered in Swadlincote in 1908
  • Clara Durose, murdered in Rolleston, near Burton on Trent, 1910
  • Thomas Ward, robbed and battered to death in Mackworth 1921
  • Samuel Fell Wilson shot dead as he drove home in Market Warsop in 1930
  • George Tyler shot in his taxi by someone dressed in RAF uniform in 1947
  • George Wilson stabbed to death outside his pub in Sneinton, Nottingham
  • Mavis Hudson, found dead in a derelict outbuilding in Chesterfield in 1966

  • An unidentified male bound and buried in a shallow grave in Burton on Trent discovered in 1970

  • Judith Roberts, brutally attacked in 1972 in Tamworth
  • Wendy Sewell fatally attacked in broad daylight in Bakewell cemetery in 1973
  • Elaine Wakefield found semi naked at High Edge Raceway, Buxton in 1982

Scott Lomax, who spent more than four years researching the cases, said: “Criminal history has shown that even decades after a murder, justice can still prevail. I aim, through my book, to raise awareness of some of these unsolved murders and hopefully, at least for the most recent cases, bring sufficient publicity to hopefully enable the police to gain new information and generate new leads of enquiry. It’s never too late to bring a killer to account.”
