Unsolved murders investigated for new book

Derby Evening Telegraph

25 November 2008

UNSOLVED murders in Derbyshire are being explored by an author who successfully campaigned for the release of TV presenter Jill Dando's alleged killer.

True-crime writer Scott Lomax has penned a chapter about a travelling performer who had his throat slit in Swadlincote 100 years ago.

Other murder mysteries explored include the case of Thomas Ward, who was beaten to death in a barn in Mackworth in June, 1921, and Barbara Mayo, who was raped, strangled and dumped beside the M1 in 1970.

In total, 13 deaths feature in Mr Lomax's latest work, Unsolved Murders In And Around Derby, which he hopes will be published next year.

The 26-year-old, of Chesterfield, has spent four years researching the cases.

He was previously a leading campaigner for the release of Barry George – the man who spent eight years in prison for Jill Dando's murder – after following the case closely.

Mr Lomax said: "There are many fascinating murder mysteries in Derbyshire and all of them occurred within a 20-mile radius of Derby.

"For each one, I've looked at various theories into who might have been responsible.

"I have also written a general overview of the cases and picked up on a few things that, perhaps, the police should have done at the time."

The author has been particularly captivated by the murder of Herbert Nottingham Turner, of Pontefract, who was killed in Swadlincote in the early hours of November 29, 1908. Commonly known as Mexican Joe, Mr Turner was a travelling entertainer who would perform tricks in pubs across Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

After entertaining drinkers in the Bull Inn, he went to sleep rough in the Wragg's brick and pipe yards, off Coppice Side.

It was there that his throat was slashed.

Mr Lomax, who is also an archaeologist, said: "Herbert Nottingham Turner's murder is as much an enigma now as on that November night a century ago."

Another unsolved murder that features in the book is that of taxi driver George Harry Tyler, who was killed on the A38 on April 29, 1947.

Also featured are Clara Durose, killed in a farm dairy refrigerator room in Burton, in 1910; Mavis Hudson, who was murdered in Chesterfield, in 1966; and Wendy Sewell, killed in Bakewell in 1973.

Mr Lomax, who is currently working with a publisher, has written books on the Jill Dando affair and the case of notorious mass murderer Jeremy Bamber.
