Eighty years on Village Still Wants Justice

NEARLY EIGHTY years after a Warsop man was murdered, local people still want justice.

People from as far away as the USA and Canada responded to an appeal for information from true crime writer Scott Lomax who has investigated the murder of Samuel Fell Wilson as part of his new book Unsolved Murders in and Around Derbyshire.

Samuel Fell Wilson was a provision merchant living on Sherwood Street, Market Warsop. He was shot as he drove to his home having been collecting money around Clipstone. His killer fired once whilst he was driving. Samuel lost control of the vehicle which came to a standstill, at which point he was shot in the face.

A massive police man hunt, bringing in two of Scotland Yard’s finest detectives of the day, drew a blank.

Scott has received letters and emails from people living in the Warsop area and former residents from as afar a field as the USA and Canada. Information and even the names of new suspects have been revealed.

Scott said: “Of course, almost eighty years on there is no prospect of identifying the killer and proving his or her guilt conclusively. However, it’s amazing to me that this small village and its people still want justice for one of its own. I have looked into many cases over the past few years and none has generated the same level of interest as my appeal for Samuel’s killer. To receive emails from all over the world form people who want to see closure for this case has been extraordinary.”

According to Scott, the police made some serious blunders during their investigations. He said: “The detectives leading the inquiry revealed far too much information about the murder. The public were being briefed every day of the failings of the police and their new theories. The killer was constantly being tipped off about how the police were working and he or she would have gained confidence from the clear confusion shown in what the police were telling the local papers. Four years after the murder they received information about a man who had allegedly confessed to the murder. They never checked out that information and so a potential lead was ignored.”
