A CAMPAIGNING
real-crime author is calling for police to open a cold case review into the
unsolved murder of a Chesterfield teenager in an attempt to finally find
her killer.
Scott Lomax
believes that the person responsible for the murder of 15-year-old Mavis
Hudson in December 1966 could now be identified thanks to the availability of
more advanced forensic techniques.
Mavis' body was found semi-naked in a derelict brewery outbuilding on Spa Lane and died as a result of asphyxiation,
though there was no evidence of sexual assault.
Police identified a number of suspects during their original investigation
but nobody was ever charged.
Now Scott (27), from Brimington Common, is urging Derbyshire police to review
the case – one of the crimes featured in his new book 'Unsolved Murders
in and Around Derbyshire.'
He said: "Although more than four decades have passed since Mavis' life
was tragically ended, there is still every
possibility that this killer can be identified and, if alive, brought to
justice.
"Modern forensic techniques have yet to be applied in the examination of
the clothing Mavis was wearing when she was killed and criminal history has
proven that even the slightest trace of DNA can be found, even after so many
years."
Scott, who was a leading campaigner to free Barry George – the man
wrongly jailed for the murder of Jill Dando – said that police did have one key suspect who is
now deceased.
Justice
He added: "I have spoken to people who knew Mavis and I am aware that
they and Mavis' family want this case re-opened.
"They want justice and they deserve it."
A spokeswoman for Derbyshire police said that there had been a previous
review of the Mavis Hudson case and there were no plans for another.
Scott was due to meet with detectives at Chesterfield police station yesterday to discuss the
matter.
