Belper News Article
The
following article appeared on page 3 of The Belper News (a weekly newspaper
covering news in and around Belper, Derbyshire) on 15 February 2006. It was
written by myself and relates to the case of Michael Brown who was jailed for
murdering his stepfather, Derek Kinder:
Killer gets some high-profile assistance
THE killer of a Belper pensioner has secured the help of a high-profile
solicitor in his bid to have the conviction overturned.
Michael Brown, 28, was found guilty of murdering his seventy-year-old
stepfather Derek Kinder, whose remains were found in a Nottinghamshire river
and also buried in a shallow grave at Ambergate.
At trial Brown alleged that loan sharks had carried out the crime after he
had failed to repay money he had borrowed.
A jury at Nottingham Crown Court did not believe the account and delivered a
unanimous guilty verdict.
However the well-respected Campbell Malone is now taking on the case of Brown
who is serving a life sentence at Gartree Prison, Market Harborough.
In 1992 Malone secured the release of the high profile miscarriage of justice
victim Stefan Kiszko, who was wrongly convicted of killing eleven-year-old
Lesley Molseed.
Kiszko had served 16 years of a life sentence before new evidence convinced
appeal judges that his conviction was unsafe.
Malone has agreed to represent Brown and is preparing a case for the Criminal
cases Review Commission, which has the power to refer convictions to the
Court of Appeal.
