Is the key to 43 year old murder in Sheffield?

The key to a forty three year old unsolved murder could lay in Sheffield, a new book has claimed.

Mavis Hudson was found dead in a derelict outbuilding on Spa Lane, Chesterfield on 27 December 1966. She had died of asphyxiation and was found semi naked although there was no evidence of sexual assault. An inquest into the death of the 15 year old recorded a verdict of ‘death by person or persons unknown.’ However, the police always believed it was a case of murder.

Scott Lomax, 27, has written about this and 12 other unsolved murders in his latest book Unsolved Murders in and Around Derbyshire. Scott believes that the police should have spent more resources on investigating the possibility Mavis met her killer in Sheffield.

A bus conductress believed she saw Mavis on a bus headed for Sheffield just hours before she was killed. Another witness reported seeing her at the Silver Blades Ice Skating Rink on Queen’s Street, Sheffield that same night.

“The police concentrated their efforts in Chesterfield, understandably, but the key to this murder mystery could very well be Sheffield and it is here that Mavis may have met her killer. Even though 43 years have passed there is still a chance that Mavis’ killer could be identified and, if he is still alive, brought to justice.”

Unsolved Murders in and Around Derbyshire is+ published by Wharncliffe Books and is priced at £12.99 and is available from all good bookshops.
