Statement in the case of Jeremy Bamber

22 February 2010

The media has, over the past couple of days, been publicising new evidence in the case of Jeremy Bamber (the subject of my book Jeremy Bamber: Evil, Almost Beyond Belief?)

I have met with the expert Peter Sutherst who has examined photographs which Bamber's legal team claim casts doubt on the safety of the convictions. I have also studied the evidence myself, having had access to a large amount of evidence. I can therefore vouch for its strength.

I am aware of the points of the arguments in the submissions to the Criminal Cases Review Commission and I believe that this evidence is the most compelling to date. It is fresh evidence, capable of belief and worthy of examination at the Court of Appeal. It is my belief that a conviction is only justified if a jury believed guilty upon hearing the truth, the full truth and nothing but the truth. In the trial of Jeremy Bamber in 1986 the jury did not hear the full truth. There is much evidence that has yet to be heard in a court of law. That is a situation in need of rectification.

Jeremy Bamber has been in prison for nearly 25 years. He has spent half his life time in jail for a crime I believe he did not commit. This new evidence needs to be assessed in court for the very first time because it points to the conclusion that Bamber is the victim of a miscarriage of justice. His case needs to go back to the Court of Appeal so that he can have his name cleared and regain the freedom he deserves.
