Crime writer insists George didn’t kill Dando (from the Evening Herald)

Tuesday June 03 2008

A WRITER who campaigned for the acquittal of a man charged with the murder of an Irish priest said he believes Barry George did not murder TV presenter Jill Dando.

The Cork-based family of Barry George have consistently maintained his innocence. His retrial for Ms Dando's murder started today at the Old Bailey in London.

George (48) was convicted on July 2, 2001, of shooting Jill Dando dead in April, 1999.

His conviction was judged unsafe by the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division) and was quashed on November 15, 2007.

True crime writer Scott Lomax (25) previously campaigned for James Harry Reyos, an Apache Indian, convicted of the murder of Co Limerick-born priest, Fr Patrick "Paddy" Ryan (49), found brutally killed in a seedy motel room in Odessa, Texas, on December 21, 1981.

He believes Reyos was wrongly convicted of the priest's murder and claims the Barry George case is another "miscarriage of justice".

The UK-based writer is the author of "Who killed Jill Dando" and now says he plans to write a book with Barry George if he is acquitted of her murder.

He has written books and articles arguing that George is innocent of the crime.

He helped run the campaign that saw George's murder conviction overturned at the Court of Appeal .

He told the Evening Herald today: "I welcome the opportunity to have this controversial case once again examined in a court and I hope that the jury reach the correct."

Jill Dando was a high-profile BBC journalist who presented Crimewatch.

On the morning of April 26, 1999, she was shot once in the head outside her front door.
