GEORGE'S HOPES FOR JILL APPEAL
Exclusive by Jon Clements 22/06/2007
BARRY George is "cautiously optimistic" that his conviction for
murdering Jill Dando will be overturned by the Court of Appeal.
But George, 47, told his uncle Michael Bourke he was afraid his hopes could
be dashed again after his unsuccessful 2002 hearing.
Friend Scott Lomax said: "Barry said, 'I'm not getting carried away. I'm
more positive about things than I have been - more and more people are
believing me that I did not do this'."
George is serving life as a Category A prisoner at Whitemoor jail, Cambs.
Solicitor Jeremy Moore has applied for him to be reclassified to a lower
security level.
Mr Moore said: "Barry is very pleased about the appeal and has started
to focus on the next stage."
The Criminal Cases Review Commission this week sent the case back to the
Appeal Court, saying forensic evidence described by prosecutors as
"compelling proof" of George's guilt was, in fact, almost
worthless.
