Fresh leads in Barbara Mayo murder

Nottingham Evening Post

Friday, November 06, 2009

A NEW book about unsolved murders including the 1970s killing of Barbara Mayo has sparked calls from the public with information.

Miss Mayo, 24, a student teacher, was found raped and strangled in woods eight miles north of Mansfield, in Ault Hucknall, on October 12, 1970.

Her death featured in Unsolved Murders in and Around Derby, which was published last week.

Author Scott Lomax said he had had calls from people with information since his book's release – and after an article in the Evening Post ahead of its publication. He said Miss Mayo's case sparked the most calls.

"I have had about four people contact me about Barbara Mayo since a story about the book appeared in the Evening Post," said Mr Lomax, best known for his book which campaigned for the release of Barry George.

"One person contacted me saying he believes his father, now deceased, was the murderer. He has sent me a lot of information that I will pass to the police. Apparently, his father had always been a suspect.

"Somebody else said they knew Barbara's mother and just provided general background information."

"I always hoped from writing the book that people with this sort of information would come forward," said Mr Lomax, who works as an architect in the city centre.

"My book is to raise interest in these cases and hopefully provide hope that they are not closed, that the police are still interested."

He has also received calls about other cases covered in the book, including the "Pretty Windows'' murder, where George Wilson was killed at his pub in Sneinton in 1963.

Mr Lomax said he has had calls from all over the world including America and Australia.
