Police Incompetence Let Killer Get Away With

A BUXTON murder remains unsolved due to police incompetence, a crime writer has suggested.

Scott Lomax, has researched the death of Elaine Wakefield who was murdered in the town in 1982, as part of his new book Unsolved Murders in and Around Derbyshire.

On the afternoon of Saturday 27 February 1982, the body of Elaine Wakefield was found at the High Edge Raceway, Axe Edge. The body was only partially clothed, wearing only a bra. The remainder of her clothing was found scattered two hundred yards away. She had died due to compression of a nerve in her neck and police believed it could have occurred during a sex game.

A manhunt failed to find any significant clues and no prime suspect was identified. In recent years DNA has been obtained from Elaine’s clothing but comparisons with this DNA to that of the original suspects has failed to bring closure to this case.

The police always believed that the killer was a local man, though they did not know who. Scott Lomax believes this is why their investigation failed to catch the killer.

He says: “The police made a serious mistake in concentrating only the local area, stubbornly believing that he must have lived locally. The reality is that Elaine’s killer probably did not come from Buxton. She was a regular user of her CB and we all know that CBs were an earlier, almost equivalent of the Internet chat room. Her murderer could have come from anywhere that was covered by the reception of Elaine’s radio. The fact the police were unwilling to believe the killer came outside of Buxton could have meant he has got away with murder.”
