Barry George
I am proud to have
been a leading campaigner for Barry George who was wrongly convicted of
murdering the popular television presenter Jill Dando. With
Barry’s uncle I ran the Justice for Barry campaign group which was set
up in the early days of Barry’s life sentence. We campaigned on his
behalf over two appeals and a retrial. Being in court to hear the foreman of
the jury announce that Barry George was “not guilty” of murder
was a proud and emotional moment for me. I am proud to
have played a role in helping Barry regain his freedom by writing books and
articles, attending events across the country, speaking to the media and
promoting the campaign at every opportunity. In November 2007
Barry appealed against his conviction, with the judges overturning the murder
conviction on 15 November that year. I was in court to hear all the evidence
which entirely undermined the forensic evidence that had led to Barry George
with being charged with Jill Dando’s murder in the first place. The
judges ordered a retrial which began in June 2008. On 1 August 2008
I was in court to see Barry George freed by a unanimous ‘Not
Guilty’ verdict. Again, key evidence that had been used to convict him
originally was undermined. The prosecution’s case was eroded to the
point that there was no case to answer against him. It is now ten years since Jill Dando was shot dead on the doorstep of
her unlived in Fulham house. Now that we have seen justice for Barry George,
after 8 years of fighting against his wrongful imprisonment, I hope that the
true killer will be held to account for his wicked crime of killing a woman
in the prime of her life and allowing an innocent man to go to prison for a
crime he did not commit.
