Bail blow in freedom fight

The following article appeared in the Sheffield Star on Friday 24 August 2007:

A CHESTERFIELD author who wrote of a book claiming the man convicted of murdering TV presenter Jill Dando was innocent today expressed disappointment after an application for bail pending his appeal was refused.

Scott Lomax, who wrote Justice for Jill, questioning the conviction of Barry George, said he was disappointed but not in the slightest surprised bail was refused.

Mr Lomax said: "For Barry to be released from HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire when, as far as the establishment is concerned, he is one of the most dangerous men in the country, would be extremely unlikely to say the least."

He said George's team, including his Sheffield-born lawyer Jeremy Moore, were looking forward to the appeal hearing.

"I look forward to Barry having his conviction overturned later this year. His failed bail application will only delay his release by a few months as this is a terrible miscarriage of justice."

George was jailed for life in 2001 after being found guilty of shooting the Crimewatch presenter on the doorstep of her London home two years earlier.

His legal team says forensic evidence used to convict him is unsafe. The case centred on a speck of firearms discharge found in George's coat pocket.
