Author backs George retrial
A CHESTERFIELD man who has written a book about the murder of TV presenter
Jill Dando says he is confident her convicted
killer will be granted a re-trial today.
The Court of Appeal is expected to announce its decision today on whether
Barry George's conviction should stand, or whetehr
it is unsafe and he should face a retrial.
His defence team argued last week that prosecution evidence about firearms
residue, put forward during his trial in 2001, was unreliable.
Scott Lomax, from Brimington, said that during the appeal hearing the
prosecution team's expert witness backtracked and said he should not have put
so much emphasis on the particle found on George's coat.
"He said at best it only shows the wearer may have fired a gun or been
around someone who had." said Mr Lomax. "It did not link him to any
murder, let alone Jill Dando's."
Scott, 25, became a supporter of George after investigating the case. He
regularly spoke to George, and published his book, Justice for Jill, in June.
